Culinary traditions of Korea

Population (city): more than 11 million people.

Area: 605 sq. km.

Grand metropolis Seoul is the capital of South Korea. About him it is difficult to write something new, as there are quite a lot. However, not everyone knows that the name of this city we speak English incorrectly.

Generally such errors are typical for transcription of Korean words. Much better would be to say “Soul”. By the way, in translation into Russian language the word means “capital”.

Seoul – the capital city with ancient traditions. Before the Christian era in its place was located Virizon, which was the capital of one of the kingdoms of Baekje. In the end of XIV century, after the unification of the Korean state, it again became the capital. Since 2002, actively discussed the construction of the new city is 150 km from Seoul. It is there I want to move the capital of South Korea. In 2003, the plan was approved by the Parliament, and even its implementation has begun. However, after the President became the former mayor of Seoul, the process went much slower.

At the moment the decision on the transfer of capital causes the most disputes between the President and the Parliament. Not so long ago this was sent in the resignation of South Korean Prime Minister. The outcome of this story are not very clear yet: so far, the Parliament adopted the decision on continuation of project to transfer the capital.

It is impossible to say exactly how many people in Seoul. The reason is that officially the boundaries of the city for a long time have not changed, in fact, the Metropolitan area increases regularly. If we proceed from the old borders, you get about ten million inhabitants. If we look at the real situation, it appears that in Seoul, home to half of the population of South Korea (and this is twenty-five million people).

It is almost impossible to find in Seoul something truly ancient. Everything old buildings, made of wood and repeatedly burned and then restored.

Not so long ago (more precisely, in February 2008) offended on authorities man set fire to ancient Namdaemun gate, which once led into the city, and later almost became the main attraction Korean. As a result the gate was completely destroyed, and which left only the stone Foundation. However, the government promised them to fully recover by 2012.

Beautiful wooden palaces (Gyeongbokgung, Changgyeonggung, Unchanged, Deoksugung and Changdeokgung) and temples, which are not so much in Seoul, also repeatedly burned – usually in times of war. Even during the most recent conflict between South and North Korea over the city twice passed from one side to the other. From the fighting, one way or another, affected about two hundred thousand buildings for different purposes.

Thus, the tradition to build in a calculation for many centuries in Seoul is not very respected. The buildings, constructed relatively recently, regularly being demolished, and in their place erect something more modern, progressive and perfect. For example, the authorities decided not only to restore the stream Changechange, but to build around him a large recreational area.

I had to destroy the highway that all the short time of its existence was operated quite successfully. The plan was initially utopian, but implemented it in a remarkably short time. Passion for the reconstructions in this city is striking: a build almost as fast as and then demolished.
